‘Behind The Folder’ with Celebrant, Nicole Lowther

My name is Nicole, and I grew up in a little village called Queenzieburn just at the bottom of the Campsie hills around 25 minutes from Glasgow. I attended local schools and found my passion in life, helping people. When I was in my senior year of high school I applied to go to university to study Psychology in the hopes of becoming a councillor to help others.

Unfortunately, the week of my last set of Higher exams I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma and hospitalised in the Beatson. I received 6 months of chemotherapy and regular hospital visits so my place at the University of Stirling had to be deferred.

Once I got better I decided to travel the world with my loved ones because come on, I think we all deserved a few holidays after the ordeal we went through. My travels spanned across the world including Africa where I volunteered for two weeks to help and support those still affected by the Rwandan Genocide.

After my travels, University was waiting for me and I really enjoyed my psychology course learning about people, their minds and behaviour before successfully graduating in June of this year with my honour’s degree.

Throughout the years I have fund-raised considerable amounts of money trying to give back to the charities who saved my life. I’ve spoke at events for Teenage Cancer Trust and Beatson Cancer Charity.

Reflecting back, It was whilst speaking at these events I found my love and passion for public speak. I was then encouraged to go into celebrancy from there. Training and completing my SQA accredited diploma through the UK Celebrant & Public Speaking Academy has literally changed my life.

It allows for me to do something I love whilst giving back to the community and spending time with the loved ones in my life. I have a great support system around me including my Mum, Dad, Sister, Brother-in-law, Brother, Sister-in-law, Nephew, Gran, Papa, and my partner and all of his family (hopefully one day in-laws, he hears me speaking about ceremonies so often I have our wedding planned and we aren’t even engaged yet!)

My goal in life is to spread happiness and I LOVE love, people are my passion and if I can make a difference in someone’s day by improving it I will be over the moon.

I cannot wait to see what journey lies ahead of me whilst I work with incredible people and share incredible stories.

I really enjoyed my UKCAPSA training, it was very thorough and has set me up to be the best public speaker I can be. I believe I have developed a lot of knowledge of celebrancy and how to be a good celebrant. I look forward to the opportunities that this course will bring me in the future.

Thank you to my tutors for all of their help and guidance, I felt really supported throughout all of my assessments and course work. If you want to pursue a career in celebrancy and public speaking this is the course for you!
